The glorious basement remodel of 2002

We bought a 1924 bungalow in the summer of 2001.  By the end of that year we decided that we wanted to do some remodeling.  Initially we just wanted to resurface the walls to get rid of this horrid spiky textured paint, and to recess the lighting. These old houses in SLC  have very short basements.  During the Winter Olympics of 2002, while Joe had a month off of work (the University essentially shut down for the Olympics) we started the demolition.  It is safe to say that we demolished too much, and made much more of the project than it needed to be, but check out the results. We are incredibly happy.

Joe did most of the work himself, but had a lot of loving help from family and friends. Special thanks and love goes out to Joe's mom, Niki, and her husband, Denis, who helped with the demolition and a lot of clean up.  Joe's brothers, Dave and Josh, helped with hanging drywall, hanging the wood ceiling, and demolition.  Our good friend Kyle did virtually all of the taping and mudding. We both couldn't have done this project without you folks.  We love you and appreciate you.  Also we have to thank the friends and family who listened to us go on and on and on for nine months until we finally got the job done.

The before pictures were taken by the previous owners, when they moved into the house in 1999.  The after pictures were taken when we finished the project in December of 2002.

Joe is done! Yay!

This magazine fell on Joe's head while he was ripping down the ceiling in the master bedroom.  It's from 1933.  We figure that must have been the date of the first basement work.  If anyone out there knows how much it is worth, let us know.  It's a piece of the history of this house, so we would never let it go, but it would be nice to find out what we have.
